English typing test

Measure your typing speed in words per minute and see exactly what slows you down: the keys, letter pairs and pauses that cost you time.

Start the test

Type the words on the screen for 15, 30 or 60 seconds. Speed counts correct characters, five per word, the standard way WPM is measured. Accuracy counts every key you pressed, so fixed mistakes still show.

After the test you see where your time went (steady typing, fixing mistakes, slow starts and pauses), your slowest letter pairs and fingers, and a percentile from a study of 168,960 typists. One click builds a practice drill from your weak spots.

What is a good typing speed?

The average in the large 2018 study was 52 WPM. 40 WPM is enough for most office work; 60 to 80 WPM is fast; above 100 WPM is rare. Accuracy matters as much: aim for 96% or better before pushing speed.

Questions

How is WPM calculated?

Correct characters typed, including spaces, divided by five, per minute. Mistakes you leave in the text do not count towards speed.

Should I look at the keyboard?

Try not to. Touch typing, where each finger has its own keys, is how most fast typists work. The free lessons teach it a few keys at a time.

Is the test free?

Yes. Tests, statistics and lessons are free. Premium removes ads and the daily limits on mock exams and coaching.
